A common misconception among new healers is that “there is one set up for talents” when that is very far from the case. Healing is very different from DPS, in the sense that we are able to swap our talents to tailor them towards what our group needs. If we are short on cooldowns, we can use Ascendance. If we are low on spot healing, we can run Undulation.

In this article we want to discuss a couple of things:
1. Provide you with a basic go-to talent build for both raiding and mythic plus.
2. Provide insight in what talents high-level shamans are using.
3. Explain each talent: its strengths, weaknesses, and suggestions on when to use it.

Each Talent Explained

Tier 15

Torrent. Improves spot healing on a strong, instant heal, which in turn, vastly increases the ability to save lives. Strong for low to moderate spot healing. Strength also lies in the fact that it is a passive, and requires no micromanagement. This is the default talent choice for this tier.

Undulation. This talent is competitive with torrent for almost every fight. It excels on fights where there are not large bursts of raid damage, but there is high tank / debuff damage. It strengthens spot healing, more so than torrent would. Pairs very well with Wellspring, as you fill in between Wellsprings with healing waves and healing surges.

Unleash Life. Important to note that it increases healing of next spell regardless of target, it places a buff on you amplifying your next heal. You almost always want to use this in conjunction with chain heal or riptide. It fits large bursts followed by long periods of low damage. If you can use it effectively on cooldown, it becomes more competitive. As of 7.2.5 it scales with resurgence and mastery. A great example where this talent is useful is Mythic Sisters of the Moon.

Tier 40

Gust of Wind. A forward disengage, Gust of Wind can be quite strong in moments where quick movement is necessary. Fights like Mistress Sassz’ine allow this talent to shine, by allowing you to have a “get out of jail free” card for her Call Vellius ability.

Graceful Spirit. This is the default talent for this tier, as it allows for us to effectively heal on the move for the vast majority of the fight, given the uptime of Spirit Walker’s Grace and the reduced cooldown given by this talent. It is very potent in any situation with large amounts of movement.

Wind Rush Totem. Acting similarly to Stampeding Roar, Windrush Totem allows us to speed up our raid to deal with difficult mechanics. Similarly to Gust of Wind, this gives your entire raid a “get out of jail free” card for Mistress Sassz’ine’s Call Vellius ability, albeit with a much longer cooldown.

Tier 60

Crashing Waves. Crashing Waves, while lackluster in raids, is very potent in Mythic Plus. It’s issue lies in the fact that we don’t extensively rely on Tidal Waves buffs in raids. In contrast, in mythic plus we rely almost entirely on these buffs to strengthen our single target healing.

Deluge. This talent is lackluster in both raiding and dungeons. We cannot guarantee that the targets that require healing are going to be in Healing Rain or have Riptide on them.  This, coupled with the fact that Ancestral Guidance is so strong has caused us to leave this talent on the shelf until it receives some attention.

Ancestral Guidance. The staple talent in this tier. Ancestral Guidance adds to our arsenal of cooldowns and burst healing and has great synergy with Cloudburst Totem. Basically, you always want to run this.

Tier 75

Ancestral Protection Totem. To be treated as a 10% DR (Damage Reduction) with a built-in battle resurrect, should someone die. Keep in mind that this does not count towards the number of available battle resses. Used mostly as a large raid cooldown, barring a mechanic similar to Mythic Botanist. An example of using this as a raid cooldown is Mythic Star Augur. The final phase had incredibly high damage in bursts, so a 10% HP boost to the raid is very potent.

Earthen Shield Totem. Solid HP absorb. Very efficient healing, useful against ticking or repeated, low raid-wide damage (Elisande or Cenarius). The only talent that shows up on meters (pad pad pad).

Ancestral Vigor. Similar to APT, but consistently active throughout the fight. Not to be played around, but very strong fallback, if the others are less effective. Should be noted, only initial target of chain heal is buffed with AV, none of the bounces are affected. Also very effective for spot heal heavy fights, as it allows you to keep specific targets alive more easily.

Tier 90

Bottomless Depths. Amazing for Chain Heal spam. Mana Return is useful if you can make constant use of the return. The gain of mana must outweigh the healing from CBT (roughly 12%). Unfortunately a very niche talent, but still good. Will always be remembered for the crazy early Ursoc logs.

Echo of the Elements. Echo of the elements is much more common than Bottomless Depths. It provides many players with a nice quality of life buff, as having additional charges of abilities makes it less important to watch cooldowns like a hawk. In reality, echo isn’t taken because of any of that, it is taken because it provides us with more tools to spot heal with. Echo allows you to effectively use your single target healing spells and reduces the amount of them do not feature a Tidal Wave buff. It is great for fights like the Corporeal Realm of Desolate host, where the damage on the raid is low, but single targets will require attention.

Cloudburst Totem. This is the default talent for us, in this tier. It has a great synergy with other talents, such as Ancestral Guidance and Ascendance. It also gives us a great boost to our burst healing, as it can be used as a “mini-revival” to quickly boost the raid’s health after a spike. I recommend you read the guide on how to effectively use cloudburst here. It is very potent on fights like Krosus, with very large predictable damage spikes.

Tier 100

Wellspring. Allows for large bursts of healing. Guldan is a good example. Large, scripted bursts that are reasonably spread. This allows for a slightly more spread healing than Chain Heal, at the cost of sustained AoE healing. It is also very mana efficient, so it sees some play on extended fights as well.

Ascendance. Incredibly niche and go-to talent for Mythic Plus. Destroys your AoE target healing in exchange for a 3-minute burst. If there is an incredibly large burst every 3 minutes where no other CDs can be used, it can be helpful. Some found this talent very useful on Mythic Star Augur, where you primarily spot healed outside of large bursts of damage to the raid.

HighTide. The default talent, as it greatly strengthens our strongest ability. Useful for any encounter that features raid damage. It becomes even more powerful on fights like Elisande, where the raid is constantly taking damage.

Great work as usual Chain Heal! Any chance of seeing a boss-by-boss talent breakdown like you did for NH?
